THE UN AT WORK FOR HUMAN RIGHTS
As stated in the preamble to the Organization’s Charter, the people of the United Nations declare their determination “to promote social progress and better standard of life larger freedom”. It thus that Article 1 of the Charter proclaims that one of the purposes of the United Nations is to achieve international cooperation in promoting and encouraging respect of human rights and fundamental freedom for all without distinctions as to race, sex, language, or religion.
Universal Declaration of Human Right
One of the first major achievements of the Nations was the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the General Assembly, on December 10, 1948. The Assembly proclaimed the Declaration “a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations”. It called upon all Member the effective recognition and observance of the right and freedoms set forth in the Declaration.
In 1950, the General Assembly decided that December 10 of each year should be observed internationally as Human Rights Day.
Articles 1 and 2 of the Declaration sate that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and right “and entitled to all the right and freedoms set forth in the Declaration,” without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.
